Help

Short answers. If something is missing, email support@demoforge.video.

First recording

1. Pick the window, not the whole screen

Click Record screen, choose the window you want to capture, then start. Recording a window (rather than the desktop) is what lets Recast frame the shot cleanly and keeps your notifications out of the video.

2. Talk while you record

System audio and your microphone are captured on separate tracks. The exported file carries both: a mixed track normalised to −14 LUFS, and a raw mic track you can re-balance in any editor.

3. Trim, then export

The timeline under the preview is scrubable — click or drag to jump. When it looks right, open Deliver and pick the versions you need.

Export presets

What are the four versions?

Slack 1280×720, aimed under 10 MB so it previews inline. Email 1920×1080, aimed under 25 MB to fit most attachment limits. Portal 2560×1440 at high bitrate for hosting. Vertical 1080×1920 for phones.

How is the file size controlled?

The bitrate is computed from the length of the clip and the target size for that channel, then encoded in one pass. Very long recordings may land slightly above or below the target; if the size is critical, export Portal and compress it yourself.

Where are the files written?

Next to the recording, in %LOCALAPPDATA%\RecastApp\projects\<project>\. Use Export to… in the Deliver panel to write elsewhere, for example straight into a customer folder or a shared drive.

License

How do I activate?

After purchase you receive a key starting with REC1.. Open the app, click Enter license in the bottom-left corner, paste the key, and confirm. Activation is verified offline with a signature — no network call.

Can I use it on two machines?

Personal covers 2 devices, Team covers 5 seats. To move a license, deactivate on the old machine first. If it is lost or wiped, email us and we will reset the count.

What happens when the trial ends?

Recording and editing keep working. Only export is blocked, so you never lose access to footage you already captured.

Troubleshooting

“No frames received” when I start recording

The target window is minimised or fully covered. Windows delivers no frames for minimised windows — restore it and start again. Recast checks this before recording and refuses early instead of producing an empty file.

Export is slower than real time

Hardware encoding is being used only if your GPU supports it. Check that a recent NVIDIA/AMD/Intel driver is installed. CPU-only encoding is roughly 2–4× slower than real time on a modern laptop.

The preview is black but the file plays fine

The preview uses a separate low-bitrate proxy generated on first open. Delete preview.mp4 inside the project folder and reopen the project to regenerate it.
